Jennifer Aniston named 'Sexiest Woman of All Time'

Forget that "Sexiest Woman Alive" nonsense. Jennifer Aniston has just been named "Sexiest Woman of All Time" by readers of Men's Health magazine.

In their explanation of why the 42-year-old "Horrible Bosses" star topped the poll, the editors of Men's Health wrote, "'Funny is sexy, and Jennifer Aniston is funny. Her down-to-earth persona makes her seem attainable, and anyone who's seen her in 'Office Space' has to admit she makes even pieces of flair look good."

Those with a stake in Team Aniston in the Aniston vs. Angelina Jolie war that has raged for nearly six years will be pleased to know that the competition wasn't even close this time: Jolie is No. 10 on the list.

Aniston also beat out Raquel Welch, Marilyn Monroe, Britney Spears, Madonna, Ursula Andress, Bettie Page, Pamela Anderson and Jane Fonda.

For her part, however, Aniston's idea of a sexy woman doesn't exactly gibe with that of the average Men's Health reader. She told the magazine she would award the title to either Brigitte Bardot or Gloria Steinem.

Though the unlucky-in-love Aniston has recently been stepping out with actor Justin Theroux, she told Elle magazine that she's in no rush to have a baby with him. Suggesting this particularly sexy genetic line may end with Aniston.

One mosquito coil equals 100 cigarettes

Smoke emitted from one mosquito repellant coil is equivalent to those of 100 cigarettes, thus causing harm to a large number of people in India, an expert said Wednesday.

"Not many people know about it, but the damage done to your lungs by one mosquito coil is equivalent to the damage done by 100 cigarettes. This was according to a recent study conducted in Malyasia," said Chest Research Foundation director Sandeep Salvi.

He was speaking at the conference 'Air Pollution and Our Health', organised by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) along with the Indian Council for Medical Research and the Indian Medical Association.

Salvi said there is a lack of awareness about the impact of air pollution on human health.

Pointing out the "lack of research culture" among Indian doctors, Salvi said that indoor air pollution too is a health risk factor.

Participants at the event, which included doctors and health researchers, also spoke about vehicular air pollution in the capital.

According to estimates, about 55 per cent of Delhi's population lives within 500 metres from main roads - and is, therefore, prone to a variety of physical disorders.

"The vehicular pollution is a major concern for the environment. The rising incidents of genetic disorder has a lot to do with air pollution. India loses one million children under five because of respiratory problems every year," said Sanjeev Bagai, the chief executive officer of Batra Hospitals.

He said industries also contribute to the air pollution and these need to be shifted out of the capital.

Actor Rajinikanth supports Anna Hazare

CHENNAI: Actor Rajinikanth has pledged his support for Anna Hazare's movement for the Jan Lokpal bill.

In an email sent to India Against Corruption on Tuesday, the Tamil superstar said he was happy that an able and dedicated leader like Anna Hazare is leading the fight against corruption.

"There can be no doubt that corruption is a dreaded disease that needs to be weeded from the Indian society. I am very happy that we have an able and dedicated leader in Anna Hazare to lead us in the fight against corruption. I wholeheartedly support the India Against Corruption movement in their campaign to get the Jan Lokpal bill legislated in the parliament", the actor said.

The actor congratulated all Indians who have lent their support to the 'bloddless revolution'. "This kind of peaceful movement is possible only in India which is the birth place of Sathyagraha," Rajinikanth said.

BJP plays safe on Hazare's demands

While there were no clear answers from those who talked to The Hindu, the party's top brass preferred the escape route by refusing to answer at all.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj was not available for comment and her counterpart in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said: “I will give my views at a time chosen by me.”

BJP president Nitin Gadkari was sent the questions through e-mail to his political secretary, but there was no response .

The Bharatiya Janata Party has refused to answer specific questions raised over the last few days by Team Anna. Does it agree that Parliament must pass the jan lokpal bill of activist by August 30? Does the BJP agree that the bill can be the only effective instrument for ending corruption? Should parliamentary procedures be cut short to meet the deadline?

However, some party leaders did speak, but evasively. When the former party president, Rajnath Singh, was asked about Anna Team's deadline, he said: “It is for the government to answer that question as the deadline has been given to the government. And how can I say what Parliament will do or not do and by what date?”

While he spoke in generalities about his party wanting a “strong and effective Lokpal bill,” he criticised the government Bill for being “toothless.” He was not willing to comment on whether the BJP agreed with the provisions of the jan lokpal bill— although Mr. Gadkari and Ms. Swaraj earlier stated publicly that the party did not approve of either the government Bill or the jan lokpal bill.

Mr. Singh added: “Arvind Kejriwal [of the Anna Team] has suggested that the government talk with the team; now it is for the government to take the initiative to break the deadlock that has arisen.”

Chief party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad refused to give a direct answer on the August 30 deadline. He, however, said: “The government has to clarify these things. The mess was created by the government; it must do something to clear it.”

There was an “outpouring of public anger” over the corruption issue and it was for the government to answer why it did not have in place an effective bill to deal with the problem, he said.

Mr. Prasad added that his party was for a “strong Lokpal bill in which the Prime Minister must be included; and separately a national judicial commission must be appointed for corruption in higher judiciary.” The party's criticism of the government Bill was that it also provided for penalties for frivolous complaints. “It has heavy penalties for whistleblowers. The BJP is opposed to this.”

‘OPPOSITION KEPT OUT'
Another party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said the government had engaged with Team Anna in the joint drafting committee for over 100 hours, keeping the Opposition out. Now it was for the government to sort out the matter. She too spoke in general terms about wanting a “strong and effective Lokpal bill” but refused to either reject or accept Team Anna's bill as “the alternative” that would cure the disease of corruption.

“All that I can say is the BJP will play a constructive role in Parliament to help adopt a strong Lokpal bill,” Ms. Sitharaman said.

Should the Standing Committee procedure be short circuited?
To this, she said once a bill was tabled, it became the property of Parliament. “It is Parliament's privilege to study it, understand it, change or modify it building on the draft before it.”

And finally, her view was the “current mess and deadlock” was “100 per cent” the government's responsibility. She did not think the obduracy and inflexibility of Team Anna was the cause of the impasse and the crisis.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Review

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin

Directed by Zoya Akhtar

Rating: ***

Films dealing with life-altering epiphanies are always shot in stunning locations. And Hindi films dealing with the same, need a stunning cast as well. A possible rationale: beautiful places relieve stress and bring things into perspective. And beautiful people experiencing divine realizations can hold your perspective on the screen, often resulting in a 'ka-ching' sound at the box office. 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' (ZNMD) is one such film.

In true 'Hangover' meets Vikas-Krishna-Barcelona spirit, the film deals with a bachelor adventure marinated with stories of finding, losing and forgetting love. Kabir (Abhay Deol), an affluent construction tycoon is about to take the marital plunge. But not before he completes a much-postponed trip with school buddies, investment banker (and constantly grumpy) Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) and freestyle flirt Imraan (Farhan Akhtar).

So, the boys with biceps shoot off to Spain, a land where sunny means a summery glow and not sweaty and stinky, much like an AC studio in Mahalaxmi. Now, the deal is that each would pick a secret adventure sport and the others would have to join him at it.

Movie Watch Site
The problem arises when Kabir's fiancé, poisonously possessive Natasha (Kalki Koechlin) lands up in Spain suspecting a wild orgy (don't get your hopes up, there aren't any). Soon, Kabir takes over as grumpy and Arjun finds hope underwater, as spunky skiing instructor Laila (Katrina Kaif) shows him corals and also offers morals like 'seize the day' and 'live in the moment for you could die tomorrow'. These prophetic pearls of wisdom (from the rough draft of Guzaarish 2?) pierce through Kabir and he realizes how he cherishes things besides money. On Arjun's exaggerated revelations, Imraan remarks, "Ek hi dubki mein zindagi ke saarein raaz khul gaye? Tujhe toh underwater hi rehna chahiye." But then Imraan only spends his screen presence saying and doing things that would be considered unacceptable or just down-right silly in adult society.

The film isn't as simplistic as it seems and each character has a back story and internal conflicts that surface intermittently between thrill-seeking stunts, sugary love, drunk talking and some seriously childish pranks. What is aesthetic in this film apart from the charming Spanish countryside is that scenes which would usually be served with heightened melodrama are quite well contained and subtle, yet convey the emotion.

The music is hummable but the choreography usually finds Abay Deol playing the part of 'Senorita'. Farhan's comic timing is immaculate but his shayari is cocaine-infused and like a soft murmuring background score it could lull you to sleep. Kalki is deliciously annoying as her character required her to be and Katrina's performance doesn't make or break this film. The film's overall humour quotient is not very high and is mostly situational and there are usually more people laughing on the screen than in the audience.

In a tasteful manner, ZNMD has managed to do for Spain, what 'Dil Chahta Hai' did for Goa, beautifully selling the beaches, babes, tomatoes, tortillas and thrilling adventure sports. Spaniards should only be cautious that this tourism AV doesn't do to their country what the malls did to the mills of Lower Parel. Do I hear McTacos? Source: http://bit.ly/oJHSO4

India beat Sri Lanka to win ICC World Cup 2011

NEW DELHI: MS Dhoni (91 not out) and Gautam Gambhir (97) helped India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets to win the ICC World Cup 2011 at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Dhoni joined legendary Kapil Dev to lift the coveted trophy for India.

Dhoni played captain's innings in the summit clash as he hit two sixes and eight fours in his 79-ball innings and raced to fifty in just 52 balls.

The skipper added a record 109-run partnership with Gambhir for the fourth wicket, which was highest for India in World Cup finals, to chase the challenging 275-run target.
Gambhir missed to score a hundred in the World Cup final as Lankan all-rounder Thisara Parera clean bowled him in the 42nd over.

After losing two quick wickets, Virat Kohli (35) added a valuable 83-run stand with Gambhir to resurrect the Indian innings.

India Wins the 2011 ICC Cricket World CupSri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga dismissed Sachin Tendulkar (18) and Virender Sehwag (0) early to jolt the India run-chase. Tendulkar was going smoothly as he hit two fours in his 14-ball 18 innings before Malinga struck in the seventh over.

India started the run-chase on terrible note as they lost Virender Sehwag (0) on the second ball of the match as Malinga trapped dashing opener LBW in his opening over.

Earlier, Mahela Jayawardene slammed 14th one-day hundred, second of the mega-event, to help Sri Lanka post 274/6 against 1983 champions.

Jayawardene used all his experience to score unbeaten 88-ball 103 as he hit 13 fours and raced to his hundred in just 84 balls.

With this Jayawardene joined the elite group of batsmen who scored a century in the World Cup finals - Clive Lloyd ('75), Viv Richards ('79), Arvinda de Silva ('96), Ricky Ponting ('03) and Adam Gilchrist ('07).

Thisara Perera joined the party in their batting powerplay as he slammed a six and three fours in his 9-ball 22 blitzkrieg. Sri Lanka piled agony for India in the period as they scored 63 runs and lost only a wicket.

For India, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh took two wickets apiece to halt Sri Lanka innings before Jayawardene started dominating the proceedings with Nuwan Kulasekara (32).

In between, Zaheer equalled Shahid Afridi as leading wicket-taker when Chamara Kapugedera became his 21st victim of the World Cup.

Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 5 wickets

Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 5 wickets in the World Cup semi final match in Colombo.

As New Zealand defended their total of 217, Sri Lankan players Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara responded with a steady stand of 70 in 18 overs, to manoeuvre their team into a formidable position of 116 for 1 at the halfway mark of the chase.

Earlier, a clinical display by the bowlers helped Sri Lanka bundle out New Zealand for a modest 217 in 48.5 overs despite Scott Stryis's fighting half-century, in the first semi-final of the cricket World Cup.

Pace spearhead Lasith Malinga and spinner Ajantha Mendis, with three wickets each, were the wreckers-in-chief, while Muttiah Muralitharan finished with two salps as New Zealand's innings lacked the thurst needed to power them to a challenging total.

Batting first after winning the toss, Styris struck 57 off 77 balls, an innings that was laced with five boundaries, before becoming Muralitharan's final ODI victim.

Sri Lankan openers then dominated and chased the runs without loosing any wickets as Dilshan hit 108* runs off 115 balls with 10 fours and 2 sixes and Tharanga made 102 not out runs off 122 balls with 12 fours and a six.

New Zealand beat South Africa by 49 runs

DHAKA: New Zealand defeated South Africa by 49 runs with 6.4 overs here at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium on Friday and entered the ICC World Cup semifinals on Friday.

Chasing a not so difficult target of 222, South Africa were all out for 172 runs in 43.2 overs.

Smith, Kallis, AB de Villiers and Plessis scored 28, 47, 35 and 36 runs respectively but these big names once again failed to propel their team to the victory in the crucial quarter final match.

India beat Australia by 5 wickets

India beat Australia by five wickets to set-up a World Cup semi-final date with Pakistan.

Once again it was Yuvraj Singh, who charted India's win with an all-round performance against the Aussies at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad, on Thursday.

First he returned with bowling figures of 10-0-44-2 and then scored an unbeaten 57 to help India beat the four-time World Cup champions in front of a packed Motera stadium.
India's Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina celebrate their win against Australia
Chasing 261, India got off to a good start with Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar putting 44 runs for the first wicket.

In the ninth over Shane Watson got the vital breakthrough scalping Virender Sehwag on 15. He wanted to play a pull but mistimed it towards Michael Hussey at square leg. India lost their first wicket on 44.

Soon, Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir went on to forge a partnership.

Sachin crossed another milestone by scoring more than 18,000 runs in ODIs. But post his half-century, Tendulkar departed with Shaun Tait scalping him on the first ball of the 19th over. He fell for 53 and India lost their second wicket on 94/2.

A few minutes later, David Hussey claimed Virat Kohli with a full toss that was hit hard towards the mid-wicket region, but Michael Clarke ensured the ball didn't go any further. Kohli fell for 24 and India fell to 143/3 in the 29th over.

Post Kohli's fall, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh batted cautiously to thwart the Aussie plans. Gambhir went on to complete his half-century.

But Gambhir's innings came to a rather bizarre end when he got run out in the 34th after surviving two run out chances. An over earlier Ponting missed a chance and again Yuvraj and Gambhir got involved in a mix up, the two escaped only to see Gambhir walk back on the next ball on 50 with a run out against his name. India lost their fourth wicket on 168.

Then it was the turn of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to take a walk. He whacked the ball off Brett Lee but Michael Clarke took a blinder in the outfield and he perished on seven. India were 187/5 in 38 overs.

Finally Yuvraj Singh (57 not out) and Suresh Raina (34 not out) batted with gusto to see India home in the 48th over of the innings.

Australia innings

Earlier, Ricky Ponting scored his fifth World Cup century as Australia scored 260/6 in their stiuplated 50 overs.

Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat. Not an unusual decision considering the nature of the wicket.

The wicket looked dry and there will be some turn in offer for the spinners. It was a good move by India captain MS Dhoni to give the ball to offie R Ashwin in the first over. And Ashwin did get the breakthrough albeit a bit late. On the last ball of the 10th over he scalped Shane Watson with his turner that crashed into his stumps. He fell for 25 and Aussies went down to 40/1.

Post that wicket, Brad Haddin and Ricky Ponting got on with a fine partnership to put 70 runs for the second wicket. Brad Haddin went on to score his fourth half-century in the World Cup, but he could not carry any further as Yuvraj Singh got the man India wanted.

Haddin went for a big hit off Yuvraj but failed to get the desired elevation and Suresh Raina took a fine catch to dismiss him on 53. Aussies lost their second wicket on 110/2.

Yuvraj, who is on a purple patch at the World Cup, came up with another vital breakthrough to send Aussie vice-captain Michael Clarke home. A top edge off Clarke's bat was taken by Zaheer Khan at mid-wicket. He departed for eight and Australia fell to 140/3 in the 31st over.

Then it was the turn of paceman Zaheer Khan to join the party and he did it by scalping Michael Hussey with his slower ball that pitched on the off and turned in a little to take the batsman's off stump. Australia lost their fourth wicket on 150.

Later, Zaheer struck back to send back Cameron White on 12 with a caught and bowled written against his name. And Aussies went down to 190/5 in 41.2 overs.

Towards the end of the innings, Ponting and David Hussey got on with a good partnership. They even took the Batting Powerplay to up the tempo in the 44th over. Ponting went on to complete his fifth World Cup and 30th ODI ton. Deep into the 49th over R Ashwin scalped Ponting on 104 with Zaheer Khan performing the final rites to reduce Australia to 245/6.

Finally, David Hussey and Mitchell Johnson added 15 runs for the seventh wicket to help Australia score 260/6 against India.

Pakistan beat Kenya by 205 runs

Shahid Afridi took five wickets and Umar Akmal scored one of four half-centuries as Pakistan crushed Kenya by 205 runs to get their World Cup campaign off to a flying start on Wednesday.

Hapless Kenya found their opponents too hot to handle after Umar hit a 52-ball 71 to anchor Pakistan's challenging total of 317-7 before they bundled out their rivals for just 112 in 33.1 overs.

Once Pakistan introduced spin, Kenyan wickets fell quickly with Afridi unplayable in the day-night match at Mahinda Rajapakse stadium.

Only Collins Obuya, with 47, and three other batsmen managed to reach double figures as Kenya -- bowled out for a paltry 69 in their first match against New Zealand on Sunday -- faltered again.

Pakistan headed for a 300-plus total thanks to Umar Akmal (71), Misbah-ul-Haq (65), Kamran Akmal (55) and Younis Khan (50) as four batsmen scored half-centuries for the ninth time in a World Cup match.

Man of the match Umar, 21, playing his first World Cup tie, gave the innings a final flourish, sharing a rapid 118-run stand for the fifth wicket with in-form Haq who was equally aggressive during his 69-ball stay.

With Umar and Haq in full swing, Pakistan racked up 70 runs in the batting powerplay, with the junior Akmal hitting four boundaries off one Elijah Otieno over.

Haq, Pakistan's best batsman in the recent Test and one-day series in New Zealand, also added 45 for the fourth wicket with Khan before giving impetus to the innings with Umar to help Pakistan put up an impressive total.

Haq, whose first scoring shot was a six, hit one more six and a single boundary, while Umar notched eight boundaries and a six before holing out off Thomos Odoyo who finished with 3-41.

Odoyo conceded 20 wides in an embarrassing team total of 46 extras.

Kenya equalled the highest number of wides bowled in a one-day innings of 37 conceded by the West Indies against Pakistan at Brisbane in 1989.

Pakistan had been sluggish at the start with openers Mohammad Hafeez (nine) and Ahmed Shahzad (one) falling in quick succession, leaving their team struggling at 12-2.

Hafeez was the first to go, failing to keep a drive down as a diving Seren Waters picked up a beautiful catch at short mid-wicket.

Two overs later, Shahzad, who scored his first run after 13 deliveries, was caught by skipper Jimmy Kamande off Odoyo.

Khan and Kamran revived the innings through a solid 98-run stand for the third wicket, pushing for singles off some tight bowling.

Pakistan next take on Sri Lanka, winners against Canada in their first match, on Saturday. Kenya meet Sri Lanka on March 1 with both matches in Colombo.

31 convicted in Godhra train burning case

Ahmedabad, Feb 22: A special court on Tuesday indicted 31 in the 2002 Godhra train burning case .

The judgement was pronounced by designated Judge P R Patel, who had completed hearing arguments of the prosecution and defence in September last year.

NDTV reports: The court pronounced judgment on the role of over 90 people accused of conspiring and burning the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express on February 27, 2002. Fifty-nine people, mostly Kar Sewaks returning from Ayodhya, were killed in the incident.

The verdict was pronounced at Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Central Jail, where the trial was held, on whether there was a pre-planned conspiracy behind the attack on the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express or whether it was a spontaneous riot situation fuelled by an altercation between Kar Sevaks and Muslim vendors at Godhra station in Gujarat.

IBN Live reports: Special Public Prosecutor JM Panchal said that the court upheld that the burning of the train was a pre-planned conspiracy. "The motive of the conspiracy was to set the train on fire," said Panchal. However, one of the main accused in the train burning case, Maulana Umarji, has been acquitted. For the families of those killed in the arson, the nine-year wait has been agonising.

Hindustan Times reported that many families of those killed on the train were living in poverty, and were angry with Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for not doing enough to help them.

ANI said the Supreme Court had on October 26 last year vacated its stay in the 2002 Godhra communal riots case, thereby paving the way for the trial court to pronounce its verdict.

The apex court, however, said the trial court should not pronounce its verdict in the case relating to the killing of former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffrey in which the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has questioned Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Tuesday's verdict, which accepts the state contention that a conspiracy resulted in the burning of the train, overturns Tehelka magazine's report that it was a case of mob fury.

Earlier on April 27, 2010, the apex court had asked the SIT, headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director RK Raghavan, to probe the role of 64 people, including that of Gujarat Chief Minister Modi in the post-Godhra riots cases. The court directive came in response to a petition filed by Zakia Jaffrey, whose husband Ehsan Jaffrey, ex-Congress MP, was killed during the Gulburg society riots along with 39 others. In her complaint Zakia Jaffrey alleged that Modi, his cabinet colleagues, police officials and senior bureaucrats aided and abetted the riots.

Australia beat Zimbabwe by 91 runs

In their first match in the 2011 World Cup, defending champions Australia have defeated Zimbabwe by decisive 91 runs.

Batting first, Australia put up a total of 262/6 in 50 overs. Though, the Zimbabwean spin bowlers bowled well, the Aussie batsmen rose to the occasion riding on half centuries by Shane Watson and Michael Clarke. Watson, who scored 79 with 8 boundaries and a six, was the highest scorer of the match. Clarke (58), Ponting (28) and Haddin (29) were other notable contributors.

Chasing 262, Zimbabwe batsmen faltered mid way to the lethal bowling of Australia’s pace battery. Zimbabwe was bowled out for 171 in 46.2 overs. Graeme Cremer (37) and Sean Williams (28) were the chief scorers. Mitchell Johnson was the pick of the bowler grabbing 4 wickets for just 19 runs. Mitchell was complemented by Shaun Tait and Jason Krejza who took two wickets each. Brett Lee and David Hussey got a piece each.

Shane Watson was awarded the Man of the Match.

Zimbabwe bowled and fielded impressively but while batting, at no stage, looked to threaten the Aussie total. Australia may not have won the match with too big a margin but their sharp fielding and top-class pace bowling has proven that they would be a force to reckon with in the later stages of the tournament. The likes of India, Sri Lanka and South Africa need to watch out!

New Zealand beat Kenya by 10 wickets

The Black Caps beat Kenya by 10 wickets chasing a measly target of 69 runs during their Group A match today in Chennai. New Zealand's Hamish Bennett grabbed four wickets in his World Cup debut to help skittle out Zimbabwe in 24 overs. Two days before he turns 24, Bennett claimed 4-16 from his tidy five overs as Kenya, having opted to bat first, lost their top half even before reaching the 50-run mark and were shot out in 23.5 overs.
ICC World Cup 2011

Tim Southee and Jacob Oram claimed three wickets apiece.

Southee dismissed Nehemiah Odhiambo and Shem Ngoche off the last to deliveries of his sixth over but could not get a chance to complete his hat-trick as Oram removed Elijah Otieno to drop curtains on the Kenyan innings.

Openers Alex Obanda (6) and Seren Waters (16) began cautiously even if run-rate was nothing to write home about.

Southee trapped Obanda in the seventh over before Bennett suddenly took fancy to beating the blade and hitting the pad of the flummoxed Kenyan batsmen, claiming three of his four victims lbw.

Only three Kenyan batsmen - Waters, Collins Obuya (14) and Rakep Patel (15 not out) -- managed double digit scores.

New Zealand missed Kyle Mills' service through a sore back but off-spinner Nathan McCullum recovered from fever to open the attack, a move that is getting increasingly popular among the visiting teams.

India beat Bangladesh by 87 runs

19th Feb, 2011: The one-day-international (ODI) ICC World Cup 2011 finally kicked off today, and the first match, India vs Bangladesh (Ind vs Ban), at Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, saw India whip Bangladesh by 87 runs.

The match saw a blitzkreig from Virender
Sehwag, who almost reached the highest score in ODIs (200* of Sachin Tendulkar in Hyderabad, vs South Africa, in 2010). His rampaging innings of 175 in 140 balls saw India score a huge 370/4 in its 50 overs. Virat Kohli ably supported Virender Sehwag, with an almost equally fierce century - 100 off 83 balls, not out. It appears like Kohli is on his way to becoming a star cricket icon, too.

In reply, Bangladesh could manage only 283 runs in its innings.

The World Cup highest score belongs to India, too - it made 434 against lowly Bermuda in the 2007 edition.

For addicts of cricket, live scores are everything, and for live world cup match scores each day, even if you do not have access to the Star Sports live or ESPN live telecasts, fullhyd.com is going to be your great friend.

Cricket World Cup 2011 Opening Ceremony

DHAKA: Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni may find it difficult to recollect when he had last taken a rickshaw ride, but he is scheduled to take one on Thursday when captains of all the 14 participating countries are taken around the new-look Bangabandhu Stadium on tri-cycles during a glitzy opening ceremony of the 2011 World Cup.

In a nation where rickshaws continue to be the most popular mode of conveyance, it is Bangladesh's way of fusing tradition with modernity. The Pontings and Sangakkaras may find Thursday's rickshaw ride amusing but, for the 14 rickshawalas handpicked to ferry the cricketing luminaries --- it could well be a life-changing experience. As television cameras capture the moment and telecast the images to a worldwide audience, they will not only get their two minutes of fame but also become part of World Cup history, leaving the rest of their ilk to envy these chosen 14.
Cricket World Cup 2011 Opening Ceremony

The much-hyped rickshaw ride is not the only thing that will be on view during the two-hour-long opening ceremony whose tickets have long been sold out. A few thousand fans who braved long queues and to buy tickets can consider themselves lucky because it offers them two shows for the price of one. The gates of the stadium will open at 2.30pm (3pm IST) and fans will be treated to a pre-show (from 4 to 6pm) before the big show gets under way with the welcome song --- O prithibi, tumi aaj chine nao (O world, it's time to know us) --- sung by local artistes.

The high point of the function is expected in the segment where Canadian rock singer Bryan Adams takes over from top singers from the three host nations --- Bangladesh, Indian and Sri Lanka --- following the formal opening of the tournament by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has spared no effort in branding the country's image with the ICC's quadrennial showpiece event.

Three of Bangladesh's top lady singers --- Runa Laila, Sabina Yasmin and Mumtaz will kick off this segment by belting out some of their chart-bursting numbers, while the mellifluous voice of Sonu Nigam will tug at our heart strings even as the 14 skippers enjoy a rickshaw ride. And there will the trio of Shankar, Ehsan and Loy to sing the theme song De Ghuma Ke (whack it will all your might) in Hindi, Bengali and English to set the tone of the competition which involves a staggering 49 matches spread over six weeks. There will also be a band from Sri Lanka to entertain the fans before Adams gives it to us straight from the heart in what promises to be a one night love affair.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which was keen to rope in Shakira for the opening ceremony, opted for Adams after the representatives of the Colombian singer reportedly asked for a cool $2 million appearance fee!

An aerial cricket show, touted to be first of its kind, promises to wow the spectators. The last time the World Cup was staged in the sub-continent in 1996, the opening ceremony at the Eden Gardens had been an unmitigated disaster. First-time co-hosts, Bangladesh, are taking every precaution to prevent any glitches. Having spruced up the nation's capital for the World Cup, the Hasina government is ready to showcase Bangladesh in a new light even as Dhaka doubles up as the capital of the cricket world for the next few days.

National Games Begins With a Colourful Opening Ceremony

RANCHI: An agonising wait of four years and six postponements later, the 34th National Games finally got off with a colourful opening ceremony at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium on Saturday.
Organisational chaos and mismanagement took some sheen off the opening ceremony but singer Sukhwinder Singh and Bollywood artists Vivek Oberoi and Ameesha Patel's riveting performances ensured that the spectators were enthralled at the three-hour programme.

A spectacular laser show towards the end of the opening ceremony brought the spectators on to their feet in the Mega Sports Complex in the outskirts of the city.

The timing of the February 12-26 National Games clashing with the much-awaited Cricket World Cup in the sub-continent proved to be a dampener as the premier multi-discipline competition of the country failed to generate a keen media interest nationwide.

National Games 2011 Opening CeremonyAs announced earlier, star son of Ranchi, Mahendra Singh Dhoni could not take part in the opening ceremony due to Team India commitments, though performances by Bollywood and local artists, laser shows and spectacular fireworks at the end filled in the void.

Amid vociferous chants of Jai Jharkhand, the state's chief minister Arjun Munda made a sincere appeal to forget about the torrid build-up to the National Games which was in jeopardy having missed deadlines after deadlines.

"Chhodo kal ki batein, kal ki baat purani. Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayi kahaani hum hindustani, hum hindustani," Munda sang the popular song in his speech that saw loud cheers from the crowd.

Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi was at his usual hyperbole, saying, "10,000 athletes and officials are taking part here. This is world's best infrastructure. This is going to be the biggest National Games ever. I'm very happy that you have got all the good facilities."

The three-hour opening ceremony began with aerobatics ahead of the formal programme as chief guest governor of Jharkhand MOH Farook, Kalmadi, Munda and Jharkhand Olympic Association president arrived at the near-packed venue that has a 35,000 seating capacity.

With the National Anthem played in the background, floral welcome was showered on the chief guests as the governor declared the Games open as tricolour balloons were released in the sky while white pigeons were set free.

The first hour of the ceremony was all about the march-past of the athletes and speeches by the dignitaries including that of Munda, Kalmadi and Jharkhand Olympic Association president RK Anand, among others.

Jharkhand's teen sensation and Commonwealth Games archery gold medalist Deepika Kumari started the relay run with the torch from one end of the stadium and passed it on to international pugilist Aruna Mishra.

Former Indian women's hockey captain Sumrai Tete took the torch from Mishra before finally handing it to Olympian hockey player Sylvanus Dung Dung.

Dung Dung, who was part of the Indian Olympic hockey team that won gold in 1980 Moscow Games, ignited the giant torch as fire crackers lit up the sky.

The 'baby archer' Deepika, who shot into the limelight at the Commonwealth Games, took the Games oath on behalf of the athletes.

There were also folk dances from Jharkhand-Maanbhum Chhau, Paika, Jhumar, Mudar, Kurukh, Karsa portraying the rich cultural heritage of the tribal-dominated eastern state of India.

A tribute to Jharkhand warrior Birsa Munda in a mesmerising 10-minute performance peppered with Bollywood numbers set the tone for the colourful opening ceremony.

Games mascot 'Chhaua' -- baby dear -- made an aerial entry into the athletics complex and ran around the stadium with the torch with echoes of 'Vande Mataram'.

There was a special laser show on eminent Jharkhand sportspersons that included Jaipal Singh Munda, who captained the gold medal winning Olympics hockey team in 1928, Dung Dung, archery coach Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Tete and Indian cricket skipper Dhoni, bringing loud cheers from the crowd.

Sukhwinder Singh crooned popular Bollywood numbers, including 'Chhaiya Chhaiya', 'Chak De India'.

In the last part of the show, Bollywood actors Vivek Oberoi, Amisha Patel and Sameera Reddy added the glamour quotient as the opening ceremony stretched to more than three hours.

A laser show followed by dazzling fireworks lit up the sky in the Ranchi outskirts marking the beginning of a new chapter in Jharkhand's sporting history.

Apple working on smaller, cheaper iPhone - report

Apple Inc is working on a smaller and less expensive version of the iPhone , Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing sources.

The prototype device is about one-third smaller than the iPhone 4, the report said, citing a person who had seen it.

Apple has considered selling the new iPhone for $200 without a two-year wireless contract, Bloomberg reported.

Apple is aiming to unveil the device around the middle of this year, but the launch may be delayed or canceled altogether, the report said.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

The company often develops products it never brings to market.

According to the report, Apple is also working on a dual-mode phone that would be able to work with the world's two main wireless standards.

AT&T, which carries the iPhone on its wireless network in the United States, declined to comment. Verizon Wireless, which also carries the device, could not be reached for comment.

Shares of Cupertino, California-based Apple closed down 1 percent at $354.54 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.
