7 Companies Hit Hardest by Rupee Fall

A lot of companies in India pay in foreign currency for importing raw material or pay for interest on their borrowing. A fall in the rupee value hurts them the most. It makes imports costlier and forces companies to pay more interest on loans.

Nine companies with a 23% weightage in the Nifty are adversely impacted by the rupee movement, according to IIFL, a Mumbai-based firm. This means their profits could be hurt. Analysts usually assess the impact on the earnings per share or the net profit per share of a company. A company’s share price usually moves in tandem with its earnings per share.

Here are the top 5 listed companies at a severe disadvantage:
  1. SpiceJet and Jet Airways:  Airline companies are the most affected directly by the rupee’s free-fall. For every 10% fall in the rupee, SpiceJet’s earnings per share (EPS) for the current fiscal decreases by a whopping 330%, according to IIFL. Similarly, Jet Airways’ profit too would see a fall of 70%. An airline’s major expense is imported jet fuel. It accounts for half of the operating cost. On the contrary, revenues are mainly in rupees. This makes airline companies exposed to exchange rate fluctuations.
  2. Jain Irrigation:  The multi-national irrigation equipment-maker is expected to see a 47% fall in its fiscal year 2013-14 EPS for every 10% fall in the rupee, according to the report by IIFL. The company reported a widening of losses in the first quarter of FY14 due to higher foreign exchange loss despite a 15% rise in revenues.

CBSE Warns Schools for Not Having Websites

Those schools which have failed to create their websites and upload details of their infrastructure and management are set to face a tough time with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) deciding not to register their students for class XII board examination.

The one-month deadline set by the board to create websites elapsed last month. “The board will initiate necessary action against the schools which have failed to comply with its directive,” official sources in the CBSE told Deccan Herald.

A large number of schools affiliated to the board are yet to develop their websites and upload details of their management and infrastructure despite a circular issued by the board to all of those affiliated to it in October 2010.

A reminder was later issued to all these school heads later in December, 2011, but it fell on deaf ears.

Peeved over lackadaisical attitude of schools towards compliance of its directive, the CBSE issued a circular on June 17 this year, directing them to develop their websites and upload “comprehensive” details of their management and infrastructure within a month.

It also made it clear to all the school heads that it will not register their students if they fail to comply with its directive, saying the responsibility would lie with the school management in such cases.

The board wants all the schools to create their websites and upload details of their management and infrastructure in view of bringing transparency in their functioning.

The details should include information about schools’ teachers and other staff, their salary, number of students enrolled, fee structure, status of their affiliation and list of members of managing committee with their address among others.

“Many schools have not yet developed their websites because their managements are uncomfortable with disclosing some of these details. But the board will not allow them to function like this,” official sources said.

To mount pressure on such schools, the board has also decided to link the “mandatory” creation of website and uploading of “comprehensive” information about their management and infrastructure with the registration of their class IX and class XI students with the board, sources added.

Passenger Rail Fares to Rise; Diesel Price Hike Proposed

The government moved on Wednesday to mend its strained finances, which have hit capital investment and put its sovereign credit ratings in peril. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government hiked railway passenger fares after a gap of nine years and later in the day sources in his government said it had proposed an increase in heavily subsidised fuel prices to rein in a swollen fiscal deficit.

The move signals Singh's intent to push ahead with politically unpalatable but vital reforms to revive an economy that is on track to post its worst growth rate in a decade.
