On December 23, President Droupadi Murmu appointed former Supreme Court judge (retd) V Ramasubramanian as the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The position of NHRC chairperson had been vacant since Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra completed his tenure on June 1, 2024. Mishra, who served as the eighth chairperson of the NHRC, was appointed to the position in June 2021. Until Monday, former Telangana High Court advocate Vijaya Bharathi Sayani was serving as the acting chairperson.
On December 18, a high-level committee, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met to select the next chairperson of the NHRC, sources said. Ramasubramanian, a former Supreme Court judge, also served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2019. He was enrolled as a member of the Bar on February 16, 1983, and practiced law for 23 years in the Madras High Court.
He was appointed to the Supreme Court on September 23, 2019. During his tenure, which ended with his retirement on June 29, 2023, he authored 102 judgments. His judicial contributions include involvement in major cases, such as the 2016 demonetization policy and the validity of circumstantial evidence in bribery cases.
