China officially welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Tianjin Summit 2025, scheduled for August 31 to September 1. This will be Mr. Modi’s first visit to China in over seven years, marking a significant moment in India-China diplomatic relations.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun described the summit as “a gathering of solidarity, friendship, and fruitful results” during a press briefing on Friday, August 8, 2025. The visit comes amid efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and economic partnerships among SCO member states.
Mr. Modi’s participation in the SCO Tianjin Summit highlights India’s commitment to enhancing multilateral ties within the SCO framework, which includes major powers such as China, Russia and Central Asian nations.
Guo Jiakun emphasized that the summit will serve as a platform for greater solidarity, coordination and high-quality development among members. “We believe that with the concerted efforts of all parties, the Tianjin summit will usher in a new stage of productive cooperation” he said.
The SCO Tianjin Summit 2025 is set to be the largest in scale since the organization’s establishment. Leaders from over 20 countries and heads of 10 international organisations will participate in the high-profile event.
The discussions are expected to focus on regional security, trade partnerships, infrastructure development and digital connectivity, aligning with the SCO’s vision of mutual growth and stability.
Before heading to China, PM Modi is likely to visit Japan on August 29 for bilateral talks on trade, technology and strategic cooperation. Following this, he is expected to travel directly to Tianjin, China, for the SCO summit.
While there has been no official confirmation from New Delhi on the two-nation tour, diplomatic sources suggest that both visits are strategically aligned to strengthen India’s presence in Asian economic and security forums.
The visit could provide an opportunity for India and China to discuss key bilateral issues, explore avenues for trade expansion and foster people-to-people exchanges. Analysts believe that PM Modi’s participation may help ease tensions and promote constructive dialogue between the two Asian giants.
With the world’s eyes on Tianjin, the SCO summit is expected to be a pivotal event shaping the future of regional diplomacy in Asia.
