The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved two major infrastructure projects worth a combined ₹9,814 crore.
New Greenfield Airport in Kota-Bundi, Rajasthan
The first project, with an outlay of ₹1,507 crore, involves the development of a new Greenfield Airport in Kota-Bundi, Rajasthan. The Rajasthan government has already handed over 440.06 hectares of land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the project, which will be capable of handling Airbus A-321 aircraft.
Key features include:
- A 20,000 sqm terminal building with the capacity to handle 1,000 peak-hour passengers and 2 million passengers annually.
- A runway, apron with seven parking bays for A-321 aircraft, and two link taxiways.
- Supporting infrastructure such as an ATC-cum-technical block, fire station, car park and allied facilities.
- The decision comes as the existing airport cannot be upgraded for commercial use due to land constraints and dense urbanisation in the surrounding areas.
Six-Lane Ring Road in Odisha
The second project, worth ₹8,307 crore, focuses on building a six-lane access-controlled ring road around Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The new highway will help decongest the heavily trafficked Rameshwar–Tangi corridor on the existing National Highway, which currently experiences high congestion due to traffic flowing through Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. By diverting commercial traffic away from urban centres, the project aims to improve freight efficiency, reduce logistics costs and ease pressure on city roads.
Once completed, the project is expected to:
- Boost regional trade, industry, and tourism.
- Generate around 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment.
- Drive socio-economic growth in Odisha and neighbouring states.
