OpenAI has officially unveiled its next-generation artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, promising major improvements in accuracy, speed, reasoning and mathematical capabilities. The launch event showcased the company’s most advanced model to date with OpenAI calling GPT-5 “the best model yet for coding and agentic tasks.”
Available immediately to ChatGPT Team users, GPT-5 will roll out next week for Enterprise and Education (Edu) customers. The model is also live in the OpenAI API, enabling developers to start integrating it into applications. GPT-5 comes in three optimized versions — gpt-5, gpt-5-mini and gpt-5-nano — allowing developers to balance speed, cost, and performance.
During the GPT-5 launch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted India’s rapidly growing role in the global AI industry. He revealed that India is already OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States and may soon overtake the US in user numbers.
Altman praised India’s “incredibly fast” adoption of AI technologies, noting how individuals and businesses are leveraging artificial intelligence in innovative ways. “What citizens of India are doing with AI is really quite remarkable,” he said. He also announced plans to visit India in September and confirmed OpenAI is partnering with local organizations to make AI more accessible and affordable.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) now enjoy higher GPT-5 usage limits compared to free-tier users. For professionals and businesses, ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) offers unlimited GPT-5 access along with GPT-5 Pro — an enhanced version featuring extended reasoning capabilities for even more reliable and detailed answers.
Enterprise and Edu customers will gain access to GPT-5 Pro soon, enabling them to handle complex workflows, advanced analytics, and high-volume AI tasks with improved efficiency.
In the API, GPT-5 serves as the reasoning model behind ChatGPT’s most advanced performance. Developers will also be able to use gpt-5-chat-latest, a non-reasoning version optimized for cost and speed while still delivering high-quality conversational AI.
With its flexible model sizes, improved reasoning, and coding capabilities, GPT-5 marks a significant leap in the AI chatbot market, reinforcing OpenAI’s leadership in generative AI innovation.
