US to Review 55 Million Visas; Five Million Belong to Indians

The Trump administration has announced a global review of all 55 million active US visas to detect violations that may lead to cancellations and deportations.

The State Department said all visa holders—including tourists, students, workers, and business travelers—will face “continuous vetting” for overstays, criminal activity, security threats, or suspected links to terrorism. Checks will include monitoring social media, immigration and law enforcement records and tax data from the Internal Revenue Service.

Violations could result in visa revocation and deportation of those already in the US. Officials are also considering a proposal to require visa applicants to post bonds of up to $15,000.

An estimated five million Indians currently hold US non-immigrant visas, including visitor, student and work permits. At least one million are already residing in the country. Since January, more than 6,000 student visas have been revoked for reasons ranging from overstays to alleged extremist ties.

In a related move, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a temporary freeze on worker visas for truck drivers after a fatal crash in Florida involving an Indian Sikh driver. Rubio said foreign drivers posed safety risks and were affecting American trucking jobs.

According to SikhsPAC, about 150,000 Sikhs work in the US trucking industry, nearly 90% of them as drivers.
