Vice-Presidential Election 2025 Scheduled for September 9, 2025

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that the Vice-Presidential election will be held on September 9, 2025, with the counting of votes to take place on the same day. The official notification for the polls will be issued on August 7, and August 21 has been set as the last date for filing nomination papers.

The election was necessitated following the resignation of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 22, 2025, creating a vacancy in the second-highest constitutional office in India.

On July 31, the ECI confirmed the finalization of the electoral college list for the upcoming election. The electoral college consists of 233 elected Rajya Sabha members, 12 nominated Rajya Sabha members, and 543 members of the Lok Sabha. Currently, there are five vacancies in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha, setting the effective strength of the electoral college at 782.

To conduct the polls, the ECI has appointed P.C. Mody, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, as the Returning Officer. Additionally, Garima Jain (Joint Secretary, Rajya Sabha Secretariat) and Vijay Kumar (Director, Rajya Sabha Secretariat) have been designated as Assistant Returning Officers.

The process for the Vice-Presidential election was formally set in motion last week with these key appointments.
